Interview Dominance

METAL CHOC

Can you remain to us the story of Dominance ?

The history of Dominance starts in 1992 when the band was funded by drummer Davide Tognoni; line-up was consolidated in 1995 with the moniker Dominance. After recording a demo-tape in 1997 the band signed a contract with Lucretia Records. We recorded the first full-length cd in 1998 but, because of some problems with the previous label, we signed a new contract with Scarlet Records. In beginning of 1999 the debut-cd "Anthems of Ancient Splendour" was finally released, gaining great success and lots of positive reviews all over the world, which we relentlessly supported with several shows: among the others, shows with Malevolent Creation, Krabathor, Suffocation and Master. During the following years the band had new line-up and label problems, but in 2004 we was newly ready for playing live. In October 2008 we entered the studio again to record the come-back album, "Echoes of Human Decay", released by Kolony Records.

Can you tell us more about your second album called « Echoes Of Human Decay » ?

Ten years have passed since "Anthems of Ancient Splendour", and during this time our sound is progressively changed. Each one of us in these years had refined his own executive technique. The sound of "Echoes of Human Decay" is heavy, fast and closer to American brutal death metal than "Anthems". The composition process nowadays is faster than ten years before and thanks of this we don’t have to wait another decade for a new album.

Can you speak to us about the recording sessions ?

We take this opportunity to thanks once more Riccardo "Paso" Pasini and his "Studio 73" in Ravenna. For his great competition he has been able to put us under an easy contest in spite of the great load of tensions (especially when the low budget makes you go crazy and running out of time).

This experience was extraordinary and the great enthusiasm of the band made our goal, during those two weeks, clear. Trough our minds, arms and legs (the drummer) we reached a great result. From morning to late night, mastering, mixing and recording were our daily bread.

How did you proceed for the composition ?

Honestly we don’t have a standard recipe: basically, during our rehearsals, every single one of us shows his ideas to the others. If we think it’s a good one, we work on it and we look at what comes out. At the beginning we have no prejudices about anything, but then we need to feel completely satisfied while playing the new stuff or while listening to the recordings afterwards. We don’t care at all if the sound that is coming out is brutal or trash, or a mixing of the two: the important thing is that what’s coming out is making us playing with all of our power!

What are the lyrics talking about ? Where do you find inspiration ?

For sure the main theme of the albums is the war: an epic battle is represented in "The Siege"; in the Gilgamesh saga (in order: Primordial, Gilgamesh and Last Witness) the war is an historical element that follows the character as long as the human path. Therefore, this theme is considered as an introspective analysis of the man, who has to fight hand to hand either with a real enemy (Duellists) or an interior one, looking for the "better world" that he cannot find (The Sailor) or a man fighting for hope and revival (Gilgamesh). This doesn’t want to be a war apology: we think, instead, that the reasons behind it have always been and still are only economic.

Who created the artwork ?

The album artwork has been created by a friend of us (www.myspace.com/designhh). We wanted to catch a war scene where, under an apocalyptic sky, thunders, panzer, the execution of the Vatincan’s swiss guard and the album title get all together a great message: we are reaching the end of this path of human history.

What’s your favourite track on « Echoes Of Human Decay » and why ?

On our first album the title track was is the most significant song, still when we play live is so exciting to listen the audience response. Once that track represented the best dominance sound, fast riffs, mid tempos, melodies changing into pure wrath in few seconds.

We can’t choose a single song to represent "modern" Dominance. In this new album there’s not a filler song as most famous band record nowadays: each song has been chosen to satisfy us.

Did you film a promotional video ?

We are working on it right now. Still we’re deciding the location, in few weeks we’re going to begin the shooting, until than we won’t say the song we’ve chosen. It’s a secret...

What are your favourite bands and all times albums ?

Maleveolent creation, Decapitated and Morbid Angel are bands since we are looking to from the beginning. Sincerely we can’t say to represent a particular band of those.

Our ideas comes from different musics that we listen to, not only extreme metal. Anyway it’s right to mention as homage Cannibal Corpse, Suffocation, At The Gates and Slayer.

What are your touring plans ?

Soon we’ll begin the promotional tour of "Echoes of Human Decay". We hope to play in many locations, inside and outside our country. We’re waiting for them.

Do you have funny or strange stories about the band you can share with us?

In all these years? Trust me, there are too many! Maybe one day we collect them in a book. Nowadays everyone write a book!

What are your projects for the future?

As first there’s the promotional tour as told before, whit situation comes together with the writing process of the new Dominance album ( you won’t have to wait another decade!)

And as a conclusion, can you say some words for my radio show called Metal Choc ?

"Echoes of Human Decay" is out on march the 13th, we worked hard for this album and is a great satisfaction for us! Next year Dominance are going to celebrate 15 years of activity!. Thanks to each one has supported us long with path, since the beginnings, to all that will buy our record and to all that will come to our live shows. We’ll see on stage headbanging, sweating and horns up!. Last but not least we thanks Lorenzo and his "Kolony Records" for the GREAT work he’s doing for us, Paso and Studio 73.
