Interview The Sorrow

METAL CHOC

Can you tell us more about your new album called Ŧ Origin Of The Storm ŧ ?

Sure. "Origin of the storm" is our sophomore album after "Blessings from a blackened sky" we recorded it in the Principal Studios in Münster, Germany, where already Bands like In Extremo, Caliban or Die Toten Hosen recorded their albums. Weīre really happy with the result and canīt wait till it will be finally released.

How long have you been recording the album?

It took us about one month to record it, mixing mastering took for about two weeks. Our producer Toni Meloni did a great job with producing and enigineering, though you always recognize, that there are things to improve.

How did you proceed for the composition ?

All of our new songs were written within three months, mainly by our guitarists Mätze and Andi in front of the PC with a drumcomputer and their guitars. Later on we rehearsed the songs and worked on details and the singing. We had to do it this way, because there was no time between all the touring, festivals and our dayjobs.

Can you tell something about the lyrics?

Itīs a very loose concept dealing with the word storm as metapher. The storm is a personal crisis, when people disappoint you in a very bad way or when beloved people pass away. "My immortal guardian" for example tells the story of a child, who was abandoned by his father. The kid believes that his father is some kind of superhero, that protects it in everything it does. But the truth is that heīs only a poor coward. But there is also one song that is called "Anchor in the storm" that pays respect to all the people that stood beside us in stormy times.

Can you speak to us about your musical evolution ? For you, what are the biggest differences between this new album and the previous?

The main difference in our opinion is, that the songwriting has become much more mature. You canīt describe the new record simply as metalcore, there are much more influences than on the old record. There isnīt that obligatory moshpart in every song like on „B.f.a.b.s.", we just did whatīs best for the songs.

Who created the artwork ?

The artwork was done again by Pepe from Azrael-design, he did all our designs until now, t-shirts, webdesign, etc. We always wanted to do something with a ship in distress, and this image transports a certain feeling in our opinion.

Which songs from the album will you playing live ? Why did you choose that ones?

On the tour with Sepultura we are playing only three songs of the new record, because we arenīt playing with our drummer Dominik, because he has some health problems. Nick from Maroon was that nice to jump in and play the tour with us. We picked the songs "My Immortal guardian", "Where is the sun?" and "Day of the lord" because they simply are the best songs to play live and they transport a lot of power when playing live.

Did you film a promotional video ?

Yes, we shot a video for "Where is the sun?". You can already watch it on our myspace or on Youtube. The song deals about with the hopelessness in the life of everybody, and itīs all about standing on your own feet and overcome your fears.

Are there certain songs on the album you want to mention or tell something about?

"my immortal guardian" is a song about a child, that was abandoned by itīs father, and the kid imagines, that the father is some kind of superhero, that protects it in everything it does. but in reality heī s just a poor coward. In general, most of the songs deal with personal issues, disappointment and frustration on an interpersonal level. Thatīs why we wrote a song like "Anchor in the storm", that pays respect to those people who stood beside us in stormy times and helped us back on our feet.

What are your touring plans for 2009 ?

Right now we are touring Europe with Sepultura until the 28th of February. After that, we will play a few smaller shows until the festival season starts. We will be on tour again in fall, but I canīt tell you a bandname or countries where weīll play yet.

Can you tell us an anecdote which particularly marked the band ?

There are a lot of moments that marked our band until today. Best moments were the day we played in Wacken, or when we got our first tour confirmed. But I canīt remember a moment that changed us in a big way.

And as a conclusion, can you say some words for my radio show Metal Choc ?

Hello to the listeners of Metal Choc! We hope to be in France very soon again, until then support Corinne. Horns up and see you on the road.
